Janet and I met a couple of years ago when she joined the company I work for as an administrator. It took little time for her to become a trusted member of our small group, and she very quickly became the go-to confidant for my fellow team members and I. While outside her job description, Janet made time to be there for each of us. Beyond feeling seen and heard by her, I felt challenged to understand myself and my role better, and pushed to take more ownership of my life and narrative, both professionally and personally. Janet openly shared her own life story and reflections, which was a true inspiration for me.
The Covid-19 lockdown was challenging for our team, and Janet helped make it more bearable. Seeing her big smile pop up on the screen on Monday mornings was truly wonderful, and she facilitated lively discussions, ensuring that both the very confident and outspoken, and the more reserved and introverted, had the opportunity to speak and engage. This was a challenging task, and Janet managed it with warmth, grace and skill. From time to time, Janet would show up at our doorsteps with something to make us smile. My favorite gesture was when she made us all apple sauce –yum! Janet brought the term ‘radical self care’ into my life during this challenging time, and I think about that on a daily basis, when balancing my own needs, with the needs of others.
Janet led our internal DEI course, focused on race and ethnicity. The reading list she put together, the exercises we did, and the shared and individual conversations we had, were eye opening, not only for us as a team of consultants, but for each of us as individuals. The course was challenging and at times very emotional, and surfaced both current and historical topics. Janet’s facilitation of the course helped us grow as a team, as a company, and as individuals. The value and importance of the discussions and reflections is hard to describe, but I can say with confidence that the course has been an instrumental part of the growth of the team, and myself, personally.
Janet has the ability to see each person and meet them for who they are and at the same time, bring people together. She brought us closer together around our commonalities, differences, and life stories. Janet is compassionate, calm and caring. She is passionate, outspoken and a force of power. It is rare to find someone like her. She is a sea of calm in a world of chaos and complexity, who tackles each challenge with a smile. I truly believe that we are in a better place as a company and as a group because Janet entered into our sphere, I, for sure, know I am.
